The next day Riley was gone, he had slipped out before Caden woke up.
And Beca and Cassy had stayed with their friend.
Caden went into the girls room, and found a note on the counter next to the sink.  It was on a plate of food and said Riley would be back around noon, and Beca and Cassy would be home soon.  It mentioned nothing about what had happened last night, not an apology, or even an I-never-want-to-see-you-again.
Caden looked at the food, he wasn’t hungry, any appetite he might have had, had been replaced with a stomach ache.  He let the note fall out of his had and flutter to the floor, he raised his head and looked coldly around the empty room.
He didn’t know what to do, he would be alone in the room for at least another two hours, Caden stood there at the counter, not having any idea what he should do.
He didn’t understand why Riley had acted so strangely last night.
Why was it so hard for Riley to be around him?
Had he done something wrong?  What had he said?
Riley had almost been close enough for their foreheads to touch, and then he had leaned away, and left the room.
He just didn’t understand, it had seemed like Riley was going to...Like he wanted to....
Caden held his head in his hands, he couldn’t think about this, it was giving him a headache.
“I don’t understand.” His voice sounded weak and unfamiliar, it didn’t not echo as it had when he had been at home, all the sound here was swallowed up by the carpet, every sound was muffled here, you couldn’t hear anything except for the loud sounds of traffic outside, never ceasing even at night.
The whole situation was just so confusing, he didn’t know how to handle this, he hadn’t spoken to another person for thirteen years and now he was in-....
In what?  In love?
How could he possibly be in love?
How could he fall in love with the only person he knew?  And wasn’t he supposed to fall in love with a girl?  Like Beca?
Nothing made sense here.
He needed something to take his mind off of things he couldn’t handle or control.
Caden looked around for the bag that held the only things he had taken with him when he left.
It was by the door to the hallway where he had dropped it that first day.
He crossed the room and searched through bag for something distracting.
There were two books, the jewelry box, and the picture of his family.
That was everything, those were the only things he had to remind him of his life, his home.
Why hadn’t he taken more?
Four things were not very much, and it was all he had left.
Of anything.
Caden slid to the floor next to the bag, his head banging against the door making a loud thump.
Sharp tears of pain sprang to his eyes, but they were quickly joined by tears of exasperation, and confusion.
He had only been out in the world for three days and he had already managed to make Riley mad at him, Beca was going to be mad at him, and judging by his track record, Cassy was bound to be angry at him soon.
Nothing was working, he should have just stayed in his house, he shouldn’t have left, he didn’t know anything here.
He had known what to do at his house, his home, where he knew every floorboard.
Knew where it was safe to step, where it wasn’t, knew every nook and cranny, where the birds liked to sleep and when the rabbits came to eat his garden.
That was his place, where he belonged.
And he had left it.
Caden stayed on the floor crying, there was no point in getting up.
I feel so bad for making him cry T_T
Poor poor Caden.
